13 Signs You're Experiencing the Silent Treatment
Ama K. Karikari, Esq.

It is not in your head. You are being abused.
The "silent treatment" sounds harmless until you've lived through it. Until you've felt the coldness enter the room like a held breath. Until the person you love becomes a wall. Present in body. Gone in every other way.
This is not conflict. It is not emotional maturity. It is punishment. It is a form of domination used by individuals with narcissistic behavioral patterns to control, destabilize, and erode the people who love them.
Experts including Lundy Bancroft, Dr. Ramani Durvasula, and the Gottman Institute agree: emotional abandonment can be as damaging, and sometimes more damaging, than verbal or physical aggression. It leaves no bruises. But it leaves deep wounds. It is weaponized by men, women, and intersex individuals. It is an equal opportunity form of abuse.
Here are 13 signs you may be experiencing the silent treatment from someone with narcissistic patterns:
Your partner shuts down and stops speaking to you for over 24 hours without explanation, whenever you fail to meet their explicit or unspoken demands.
The silence is not empty. It is filled with anger, tension, and hostility.
You feel physically ill, anxious, or hollowed out because of the silence. You reach for reconnection not out of love, but just to make the pain stop.
Your partner appears perfectly fine around others. Warm. Even charming. The version of them you're desperate to get back. But at home, you don't exist.
When you ask what's wrong, they refuse to tell you. You are left to guess. To spiral. To blame yourself.
Without warning, they return to normal. No apology. No explanation. As if nothing happened.
They expect you to return to normal too. Immediately. Completely.
When you ask for an explanation, they act as if you are the problem for needing one.
You walk on eggshells. You rehearse your words before you speak them. You monitor your tone, your face, your posture, terrified of triggering the next shutdown.
You have stopped asking for what you need. You've learned it isn't safe to want things.
You feel afraid of what others might say around your partner, knowing their words could be used to justify the next silence directed at you.
You dread the sound of the front door. Their presence doesn't bring comfort anymore. It brings a held breath.
There are moments when the isolation becomes so unbearable that you wonder how much more you can take.
If any of this resonates with you, please hear this: you are not imagining it. You are not too sensitive. You are not the problem.
This is not love. This is not partnership. This is abuse, and it has a name.
You deserve safety. You deserve to be heard. You deserve a home that feels like rest.
