SOARING SISTER STORIES
How the Silent Treatment Destroys Self-Esteem and How to Rebuild Yours
Ama K. Karikari, Esq.

I define the silent treatment as the intentional refusal to communicate, interact, or acknowledge another person as a form of punishment or control usually for a period of twenty-four hours or more. Additionally this silence is paired with hostile energy. Finally, the perpetrator resumes communication on his or her terms without any discussion or form of repair. But what it *communicates*—without a single word—is far more devastating: You are nothing. You don’t matter. You are invisible.
When someone you love withdraws emotionally for days, weeks, or months, your nervous system goes into freefall. Over time, you become anxious, hypervigilant, hesitant, and afraid to assert yourself. You learn to walk on eggshells. You stop expressing desires because you fear retaliation. You shrink to survive. This erosion of your self-esteem is not an accident—it is a predictable outcome of emotional abandonment.
Experts like Dr. Steven Stosny note that chronic emotional withdrawal activates the same pain centers as physical injury. Dr. Ramani explains that narcissistic behavioral patterns often rely on the silent treatment to induce self-doubt. And domestic abuse specialist Lundy Bancroft emphasizes that silence is a tool of domination designed to make you question your worth and reality.
But here is the truth: self-esteem can be rebuilt. Your spirit can rise again.
Healing begins with five steps:
1. Leave if your partner does not stop. Emotional abandonment is abuse, and no amount of love can heal a person who refuses to change.
2. Affirm yourself at every opportunity. Replace the silence you were given with words of truth, compassion, and worthiness.
3. Develop your own code of values. Decide who you are outside the relationship. Anchor yourself in integrity, dignity, and self-respect.
4. Build boundaries—and honor them.** Boundaries are self-esteem in action.
5. Rely on your higher power. Trust that God, the universe, or your spiritual source will meet your needs and restore what was taken.
The silent treatment may have wounded your self-esteem, but it cannot destroy your destiny. You can rebuild. You can rise. You can reclaim your voice and your value.
