SOARING SISTER STORIES
What to Say to Relatives Who Criticize You for Divorcing Due to the Covert Abuse of the Silent Treatment
Ama K. Karikari, Esq.

When I told my brother I was getting a divorce, he texted me that he didn’t want his nephews growing up in a “broken home.”
He didn’t know our home had already been breaking for years. Quietly. Silently. One cycle of emotional withdrawal at a time.
Nobody warns you about this part of leaving. The divorce is hard enough. Then your own family hands you a verdict before they even ask you a question.
Here is what I want every woman in that position to know: your home was never broken by your decision to leave. It was broken long before that, by silence.
Why “Staying Together for the Kids” Can Cost You Everything
Recovery starts with a hard truth: many of us walked into years of chronic emotional abuse by putting everyone else first.
We muted our needs. We quieted our instincts. We over functioned. We carried the emotional load for an entire household and called it love.
Leaving requires a different kind of courage. It means putting yourself first and understanding that your wellbeing is the foundation your children’s entire future is built on.
The research backs this up. The strongest predictor of a child’s long term success is not an intact marriage. It is a mother’s happiness. Children thrive when their mother thrives. They grow up emotionally safe when she is emotionally safe.
What to Actually Say to Relatives Who Judge You
You do not owe anyone your trauma as proof. You do not need to defend your peace with a highlight reel of your worst days. A few lines that work:
“I didn’t leave a marriage. I left abuse.”
“My kids don’t need a broken home. They need a mother who’s alive and whole.”
“I’m not here to debate my decision. I’m here to protect my peace.”
“You saw the outside of my marriage. I lived the inside of it.”
“This isn’t about you being wrong. It’s about me choosing to survive.”
Say it once, calmly, and let it stand. You are not required to keep explaining a decision that saved your life.
This Season Is Sacred
Do Zumba. Walk in nature. Sing. Pray. Meditate. Sleep deeply. Go to therapy. Cry until your spirit feels lighter.
Every breath of peace you take right now is a resurrection.
You are not breaking your family. You are saving your family.
You are healing. And because you are healing, your children will be okay.
Your home is not broken. It is being rebuilt on a foundation where everyone finally gets to live in emotional peace and safety.
