SOARING SISTER STORIES

Why Did a Japanese Husband Refuse to Speak to His Wife for 20 Years?

The answer may disturb you.

The answer may disturb you.

Ama K. Karikari, Esq.

For twenty years, Japanese husband Otou Yumi refused to speak to his wife, Katayama. Not for twenty days. Not for twenty weeks. Twenty years.

According to reports, Katayama repeatedly attempted to speak to her husband throughout their marriage, only to receive grunts, nods, or cold silence in return. Yet somehow, despite this emotional distance, the couple continued living together, raising their existing children, and conceived an additional child. Their last-born child and son grew up never hearing his parents have a conversation.

At age eighteen, their son became so distressed by the situation that he wrote to a television show asking for help. The show arranged a meeting between the couple and finally asked the question everyone wanted answered: Why had Otou Yumi ignored his wife for two decades?

Did she insult him? Did she humiliate him? Did she betray him by sleeping with another man? Did she scream at him, hit him, or disrespect his mother? No. According to Otou himself, he stopped speaking to his wife because he felt jealous that she devoted so much attention to their children. So he decided to sulk. For twenty years.

As shocking as his explanation is, what haunts me even more is a different question: Why did Katayama endure it? Why did she accept a life of emotional abandonment?

As someone who experienced cyclical silent treatments in my own first marriage, I understand more than most people realize how psychologically devastating this behavior can be. Many people dismiss the silent treatment as a "communication issue" or personality quirk. It is not.

The silent treatment is the intentional withdrawal of communication, connection, and emotional responsiveness, often paired with coldness, hostility, or contempt. It typically lasts longer than 24 hours and occurs without healthy repair afterward. In many cases, it is a form of emotional abuse and coercive control.

Human beings are biologically wired for connection. When someone we love suddenly withdraws emotional connection, especially without explanation, the brain and body often interpret it as danger. Research has shown that social rejection and emotional exclusion activate some of the same pain centers in the brain associated with physical pain. Chronic relational stress can also contribute to elevated cortisol, anxiety, hypervigilance, sleep disruption, depression, and inflammation in the body. The effects are not "just emotional." They are neurological, physiological, spiritual.

And for children raised in these environments, the damage can be profound. Children learn what love looks like by watching their parents. When silence becomes the emotional climate of the home, children may internalize anxiety, confusion, emotional suppression, people-pleasing, fear of abandonment, or unhealthy relationship dynamics.

This is why we must stop romanticizing endurance. Staying is not always strength. Sometimes leaving is. No human being deserves to beg for basic communication, warmth, or emotional safety inside a relationship.

If you are experiencing chronic or prolonged silent treatments, please know that you are not "too sensitive," "crazy," or asking for too much. Healthy relationships require communication, repair, accountability, and emotional presence. You deserve all four.
